Abstract:
In this talk we will give an introduction to Riemannian and conformal manifolds, which play a fundamental role in various areas of mathematics and physics. In particular, we will explain how they can be described equivalently as certain types of Cartan geometries,—a concept introduced by É. Cartan at the beginning of the 20th century which provides a uniform approach to a large variety of geometric structures on manifolds. As time permits, we will also discuss some applications of this approach to problems in conformal geometry.
